The Elegant Ladies Collective is a group of creative, determined, empowered women and non-binary gendered persons who are interested in creating social change through art and performance.
The Elegant Ladies Collective was founded in 2014 for the Vancouver Fringe Festival Production of "Eidola", which was our first site-specific original work. "Eidola was a collaborative exploration of Shakespeare’s female characters, trapped in time and space, searching for expression and recognition beyond their roles. This show features a variety of performance styles including dance, theatre, opera, improv, music, and circus that reveal aspects of the Bard’s iconic women from a variety of new perspectives. All proceeds from the ticket sales went directly to support local women's charities such as WISH, Minerva Foundation, Cause We Care, DEWC, The Women's Health Collective, CampOUT, The Wet Ink Collective, and WAVAW.
We are thrilled to report that our 2014 show sold out the entire run, and we were about to donate $200 to each of our charities! Thank you for the support.
We also have begun a tradition of an annual Cabaret show, The Elegant Ladies Cabaret, in March of 2015 as a fundraiser for ongoing fringe productions. Our first Cabaret was hosted by Emmelia Gordon and featured incredibly talented women, including poets, singers, dancers, burlesque, opera, theatre, and much more. We hope to do it again in 2016!
Our 2015 Fringe Show, "ESUM" continued in the tradition of site-specific, original, interdisciplinary performance. ESUM is muse spelled backward, and in this show wr explored the question - where does inspiration come from? The show took place at Malaspina Printmakers and the use of a gallery space inspired us to create a story in which vignettes of artists who were 'blocked' from being able to create in various ways were assisted by the audience in releasing their blocks.
ESUM raised $125 for each of the following local arts organizations to support young, emerging and disadvantaged artists: Gallery Gatchet, Arts Umbrella, GoPlay, the LEAP program at Arts Club Theatre, ArtStarts, Theatre Terrific, and the Vancouver Poetry House (for Wordplay and Hullabaloo).
Our 2016 show, "Peripeteia" was our most innovative show yet. Taking place at Ron Basford Park, it was be an exploration of the turning points in our lives where the direction of everything changes. The audience explored the space and experienced the turning points of poets, dancers, musicians, and performers of all sorts while being challenged to consider their own transformational moments. We gathered for tea and cookies at the end. We raised $300 each for the following charities: Camp Kerry, The Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation and WAVAW.
The Elegant Ladies are back this year for our 4th year with another interactive, site-specific, interdisciplinary theatrical extravaganza. Make a choice, make a change, make a difference - this year we are at Make, and we are challenging our audience to collaborate with us as we actively defy artistic conventions and spawn new art together.
