In The Beginning...
My vision was to have a group of women who are performing artists in differing forms (actors, dancers, musicians, poets, circus artists) collaborating together on this project, which will interpret Shakespeare's women from a variety of perspectives and in a variety of forms.
Some pieces would be more literal, some more interpretive. The goal was to get together as many female artists as possible to be a part of this and to collaborate on this project. All artists who have an interest and are available for the Fringe are welcome to contribute, this is a collaborative project.
The other aspect to this show that I hope makes it truly unique is that I am planning to have each show become a fundraiser for a local women's charity - DEWC, WISH, The Minerva Foundation, Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter, etc. I know that traditionally funds from Fringe shows go to the artists, but I would like to have the chance to donate our ticket sales to various women's charities as a way of continuing the theme of the show - exploring women's voices, women's perspectives, and women's experiences through the examination of the women of Shakespeare's plays, and using these voices to further empower women and give them a voice. So your contribution would help with these charities. Further to this I ran an indiegogo campaign to raise funds for the show, and was successful enough to cover costs and to be able to offer ticket sales directly to charities. More on this soon.
This is a site-specific work through The Vancouver Fringe's Onsite program, lead by Kendra Falconi of the Only Animal. It's been a wonderful adventure developing ideas for the show through this program.
More to come, will keep you posted!
